WHITEPAPER: WHY AND HOW NUCLEAR ENERGY CAN BE INCLUDED IN THE ASEAN TAXONOMY

Jul. 26 2023

Could nuclear energy be the answer to sustainability efforts in Southeast Asia?

The need for emissions-free power is crucial as Southeast Asia strives to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. As renewable energy gains importance in helping companies meet their climate goals, including nuclear energy in the existing EU taxonomy may allow access to additional funding sources and ease the financial burden associated with developing nuclear power projects.

Bureau Veritas has partnered with Centre for Strategic Energy and Resources (CSER), an independent think-and-do tank and a non-profit organisation to redact a policy brief on why and how nuclear energy can be included in the ASEAN Taxonomy.

We have provided a concise summary of nuclear energy, policy options and recommendations for policymakers.

Report Highlights:

  • Nuclear energy as a strategic option to combat the practical challenges for deployment in ASEAN.

  • Nuclear energy inclusion in the green taxonomy as an enabling step for financing regional nuclear projects

  • A regulatory framework for licensing nuclear projects should be established in consideration with sustainability criteria

  • An ASEAN regional taxonomy framework as crucial to guide the national sustainable financing regulation and safe implementation of nuclear assets
